The 5 Biggest Football Leagues That Excites Football Fans
A definite conversation starter can turn into an immediate conversation ender: discussing the top football leagues with any football fan can get quite heated.
Choosing top leagues is subjective and relies heavily on statistics, skills and a serious worldwide following. To make it easier and avoid further debate, we have decided to focus solely on European football leagues’ analysis. It might not be a surprise to many that the top European leagues also happen to be some of the world’s best clubs.
If you search ‘The Best Football Leagues’ online, you’ll soon find out that there is no international league. Making this judgement is difficult when the leagues don’t play against each other. Only the top teams from the individual leagues get to play against each other in the UEFA Champions League. As a result, the leagues’ ranking is heavily based on popularity and the amount of income it generates, not on skillset.
For the sake of simplicity, we’re only highlighting the most significant leagues and not ranking them, because that would spark a serious debate. So, in no particular order, here are our top five most significant football leagues.
The English Premier League
The English Premier is the league with the most extensive following and the biggest financial muscles. The Premier League broadcasts worldwide generating some serious revenue, which let’s face it is a top priority in football.
Over the last five seasons, we’ve seen Chelsea, Leicester, Arsenal, Tottenham, Manchester United and Liverpool fighting for the top three league spots. These teams are made up of some of the best players and provide entertainment from August until May.
The EPL (English Premier League) is rich in history which dates back many years. From the stadiums to the huge fan-base, the EPL creates an exciting experience for anyone who tunes in.
Serie A in Italy
Serie A, the Italian football league contains some of the best teams in Italy. Teams like Inter Milan, Juventus and AC Milan are among those household names and boast uber-famous players such as Michael Bradley, Wesley Sneijder, and Gianluigi Buffon Daniele De Rossi and Zlatan Ibrahimovic to name a few.
Despite the match-fixing scandal in 2006, we’re hoping that Serie A will be able to rid themselves of the bad reputation and play some great football. Tune in this season and enjoy some solid playing and great entertainment.
Spanish La Liga
The Spanish La Liga is undoubtedly the best to come out of Spain and has been around since the 1920’s and still features teams that remain in pole position in the league.
La Liga is known for two of the most impressive football teams and some of the world’s greatest players. Real Madrid and Barcelona boast Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi who have an illustrious football history scoring a record amount of goals in 2012. Barcelona has won La Liga 25 times with Real Madrid winning an astonishing 33 times.
German Bundesliga
The Bundesliga was only founded in 1963 but has still managed to acquire an impressive fan base. It consists of seven teams and has been dominated by FC Bayern Munich for the last six years. This strong league is backed by passionate fans who in previous years, sold-out the stadiums.
French Ligue 1
Not the highest-ranking team, the French Ligue 1 has some incredible talent. Paris Saint-Germain is the front runner in Ligue 1 and just happens to be one of the world’s wealthiest clubs. PSG (Paris Saint-Germain) have won seven of the last eight titles.
Unfortunately, the French Ligue 1 teams have had less luck in the Champions League. Not a single French team made it to the quarter-finals last season; a similar situation happened in the previous year.
Monaco almost made it to the semi-finals in 2017 but was promptly defeated by other wealthier and more talented teams in the competition. Sadly the league has seen very little success despite boasting some incredible talent.
So it is clear that to reach the top in Football you have to have very deep pockets. It all comes down to revenue, supportive fans and wealthy investors. Unfortunately, it seems that skill is not highly valued in the battle for TV revenue and exposure. However, these leagues have been around for years and aren’t showing any signs of changing.
We love football, but this time, we’ll leave these top teams’ ranking to you.
